Bayworld Aquarium, Eastern Cape, South Africa

The Bayworld Aquarium is known for its underwater observation area in the aquarium, a dolphin research centre, as well as two large tanks housing sharks and stingrays and various smaller tanks for different species of fish.

It is situated on Beach Road, Humewood by Port Elizabeth alongside a smaller tropical tank displaying a variety of tropical fish and sea turtles.

A Seal Pool was opened In 1933 but due to the smell and night-time barking the pool closed and the seals were evacuated. Bayworld is facing an interesting future. The proposed redevelopment will ensure a world class visitor appeal with a totally unique experience.

Oceanarium:
The Oceanarium at Bayworld was constructed over a period of 10 years. It was originally a 900 000 litre main fish tank which was built as far back as 1959.

Dolphin and seal presentations take place daily. Within the Oceanarium one can visit the Bayworld Museum and explore many aspects of our environment.

Some history:
It housed dolphins for a number of years where the famous dolphin Dimple gave birth to a calf, Dolly which died at the age of 37 years and is believed to be the oldest surviving dolphin conceived and born in an Oceanarium. After housing dolphins for a number of years, the pool was re-established as a fish tank in 1968 when the new dolphin lake was completed and is now home to a wide variety of large fish, sharks and turtles.

Snake Park:
In 1919 the Snake Park was then opened in the spacious grounds of the mansion in Bird Street - the first of its type in the world. In the early days the snake handler became enormously popular. He is reputed to have been bitten on average once a year for the 30 years while on staff at the Snake Park.

Demonstrations take place on a daily basis and a large variety of reptiles can be viewed as they are housed safely in glass enclosures in a realistically created environment.
