The best South African wines come from cellars in or around Stellenbosch in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Some of the better established wineries include, Meerlust, Rustenberg, Haute Cabriere, Vergelegen, Steenberg, Paul Cluver, Bouchard Finlayson, Mulderbosch, Constantia Uitsig and Uva Mira.
Travelling in the Western Cape allows you to visit estates focusing on South African red wine like Pinotage, which has been most successfully produced by Byerskloof. This wine is reasonably priced but it is a great wine to enjoy with an evening meal. Other popular South African red wines include Merlot, Cabernet and Shiraz, with many cellars producing blends of these cultivars. South African white wines are also very popular, with Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay being of the more popular.
Driving along the R44 between Somerset West and Paarl you can stop off at cellars dotted along the way for wine tasting or for a meal at one of the great South African winery restaurants You don't have to visit the country to taste the regions great wines though, you can buy South African wine in supermarkets around the world, from TESCO in the UK to Family Mart in South Korea. Failing that you could simply order South African wines online and have them delivered to your front door.
